10/17/24 - Unicorns Get More Bacon by Marc With a C
It was only a matter of time before the wheel gave me a Marc With a C album, since they're the artist I have the most records from! Marc With a C is my favorite musician right now and has been for a few years! I got into Marc’s music in late 2022 thru a recommendation from a friend (if you’re reading this - hi! thank you!!), and the moment I was hooked is when I listened to The Obscurity Trilogy for the first time. This trilogy is made up of the album “Obscurity,” the E.P. “Half Serious Half Kidding,” and the first part, today’s album, Unicorns Get More Bacon.
Like yesterday’s State Songs, there’s only one pressing of Unicorns Get More Bacon on vinyl. I got my copy for Christmas from my friend and bandmate (different friend from the other friend mentioned. again, if you’re reading this - hi!! T hank you!!), and it was actually one of the first two Marc With a C albums I got on vinyl! The album is on hot pink wax with a blue splatter in the middle. It’s a very pretty record - if you haven't seen it, Discogs has scans of it, it’s very worth looking at I think!
To be completely honest, I wasn’t terribly into this album at first. I thought there were more interesting things going on in the following parts of the Trilogy, and felt this one was kind of just forgettable. Do I feel that way now? Not at all. This album has some pretty cool lo-fi tones going on here - especially with the song Ethics in Gaming. Ethics in Gaming has this one part in the very beginning where the bass guitar and bass drum mix together and it almost sounds like the bass is being played with a bow. It’s a really cool sound, I think. Texas Myron is my favorite track here. Lyrically - I’ve never dug that deep into it, so I don’t know what it’s about. Actually, I’m not really sure what I like so much about the song, or at least I lack the words to properly explain it. Same goes for the closer, Long Distance Dedication.
Lyrically, a lot of the songs on Unicorns Get More Bacon are about the state of popular culture and the world at large in 2015 - 2016. There are songs about the unglamorous D.I.Y. rock-and-roll life-style, messing up publicly on social media, unfulfilled childhood dreams, and weird celebrities on this album. Some of these lyrics can be a bit dated, but I think it works here. Either way, Unicorns Get More Bacon is a really fun album. I would definitely check it - and The Obscurity Trilogy as a whole - out if you’re into lower-fi indie rock!
Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow!
